Adopting

Adopting a pet is huge responsibility, this is a commitment to take care of another life for upwards of 18 years. Please make sure you are ready for this before filling out an adoption application.

Here at Puca’s Pack we work with each dog, for at least 3 weeks, before adopting them out. We take our time to find out their behaviour issues and do our best to revert those behaviours. Our certified Dog Psychology and Behaviour Modification specialist works with our dogs until we feel they are fit for a new home. Each dog gets daily exercise, mental stimulation, and lots of obedience training. We work on boundaries to insure the dogs have a good understanding of what is expected of them before they leave our home.

On the day of adoption, one of our team members will walk you through the basic training and commands we use with your new dog to insure you have the best chance for success. This day will consist of 1-6 hours (depends on the dog) of training methods used on your dog, success and failure stories, introducing the dog to your house and family, multiple structured walks, and much more. We will go our separate ways once everyone feels comfortable.

Puca’s Pack is committed to our dogs and encourage all adopters to stay in contact with us. We are here to help you work through training issues that may arise after adoption. We will do everything we can to help you and your furry friend live a happy life together.

Should the adoption not work out, we require, as per the signed Adoption Agreement, that the dog be returned Puca’s Pack. However, we do expect that anyone who adopts one of our animals is willing to work through any behaviour issues that arise (within reason). Our help and support is always available to you for the life of your dog.

A little bit about me:

I graduated with flying colours on October 10th from Dog School! I’m being fostered in Baja Mexico until I find my forever home.

I recently had the privilege of fostering Jason for two months (June and July 2023). What a sweet boy! He chills well, loves to go on walks, ride in the car, and loves everyone who comes to visit. He’ll give a couple of quick barks when he hears a noise outside that he doesn’t recognize, but doesn’t go on and on. I would’ve adopted him, if I didn’t already have three dogs back in the states. Very hard to leave him. Rick

Foster dad update: Jason and I are getting along great. He gets pretty excited sometimes (grabs and pulls on my clothes, jumps over the furniture, etc.). I didn’t want to discipline him initially, but now I stand up and say no, and walk away from him and he calms down. He usually follows me everywhere (I go looking for him if he doesn’t), and we go for a 10 minute walk in the morning (he won’t go #2 in our yard), then take him on a 45 minute to an hour walk in the evening. Great dog!

Jason is smart and fun to be around; because he's so intelligent, training is a snap for him - he masters agility or any skill easily.

Jason’s the type of dog that makes eye contact with his person (handler) and wants to please them, ie he wants to be emotionally connected with a person. He is playful and engages with other dogs but does not like it if a male tries to dominant him, that could start a fight.  Because of his strength he should be monitored closely while meeting other dogs to ensure compatibility.

He’s been going on hikes, on and off leash, with volunteers and is a great hiker. Jason would be a perfect companion for someone who likes outdoor adventures.  Jason is not the kind of dog that will run away if let off leash but rather he will frequently 'tag up' and check back in with his person.  He loves car rides.

Here is a comment from a volunteer who has hiked with Jason many times and has done some obedience training with him, "I LOVE this guy! He looks up to me for direction and guidance and I know he wants to do the right thing but has likely had very little people companionship and direction in his life up until now. The right person will be lucky to have this boy in their life. If his adopter continues his leash and obedience training and allows for plenty of exercise, they will be rewarded with a loyal and wonderful friend."

Jason completed his Dog School Training on Oct 10th 2022 as a star student,  the head trainer said he would adopt him if he didn't already have a full pack. This is a note from his trainer: "Jason is a sports dog by nature; any challenge that comes his way is not a challenge for him. He loves to play with balls and to do agility circuits. He responds to game stimuli when training him. He is a very obedient dog and is focused on tasks, he’s also a very affectionate dog with a protective instinct if given love properly."

Jason currently shares his foster home with a big pittie girlfriend.

Jason knows basic leash skill and obiedence commands like sit, down, off, wait, heel (loose leash walking) and come.

Energy level: Active and Playful

A little bit about me:

Enzo was found on an abandoned property, hungry and malnourished. Since arriving at Cortez we've all grown to love him and his love for life. He enjoys a good walk and minds well. He can be a little growly with new dogs so proper introduction is needed. That being said, Enzo has made many dog friends at the rescue and does quite well in a play group of 4 or 5 dogs. He has a lot of energy and will often use his free time doing zoomies, chasing balls, or jumping in water. This guy is a lot of fun and would enjoy an active family. Enzo is amazing and sometimes can become over excited which can lead to unwanted behavior where he can become mouthy and jumpy. Firm commands and a spray bottle work well to calm him down. More than likely these behaviors are a result of kennel stress and we believe this behavior will diminish once he is in a permanent home and settled in.  Before leaving Cortez Rescue, Enzo will be given a full medical assessment to ensure he remains in optimum health.

A little bit about me:

Fiona was rescued from a garbage dump.  It took volunteers 3 days to catch her.  She is believed to be 9+ years old and in good health.  Her age doesn't stop her from being active and even getting the zoomies from time to time.  Fiona would be a great companion for a retired person or couple or someone who has a slower paced life.  She really wants to be with her people and hang out.  She is sweet and loving and searching for human affection and love.  Fiona currently lives in Baja near Cabo San Lucas. Before leaving Cortez Rescue, she will be given a full medical assessment to insure she is in optimum health for her new family.

A little bit about me:

05/22 Update! Xavier wasn't do well at the rescue with other dogs so one of the volunteers took him to foster. He had 3 days to decompress and then was introduced to a pack of 5. He gets along great with all of them! Xavier likes toys of any sort and will happily play by himself. He does like to play fetch too. He is great on leash.  He can be a little protective over toys and food but he minds very well when corrected as he does not want to disappoint you. Xavier is well behaved, loves his pets, is quite chill and rarely barks. He would be happy to go anywhere with you. He is an excellent dog!

Xavier is a happy boy! He likes to go for walks and his leash skills are improving every day. He's just learned to play with a ball but only by himself for now. He's very affectionate and enjoys all the pets you can give. Xavier is pretty laid back and chill most of the time but then his silly side comes out and you can't help but smile.

A little bit about me:

I am adorable but I've been waiting for over 2 years for my furever family.

Foster update: Zeus is an adorable dog. He’s goofy, smart, easily trained (with food or praise), likes to be a good boy, potty trained, and good on leash (if he knows you’re the boss). But what is so endearing about Zeus is when he cocks his head to listen to what you are saying, his expressive looks and how much he loves to cuddle. He is also compassionate. We had a friend babysit him while we were out of town. She was going through some stuff and told me that whenever she was crying, Zeus would snuggle up to her and lick her tears away. Although he is not a barker, he will alert you if someone is at the door or he hears an unrecognizable sound. Sometimes he will bark in response to our neighbor’s barking dog but will stop when told to. It’s hard for him to contain his excitement when it’s meal time, when he knows he’s going for a walk or a ride but he can settle down when you tell him to sit and stay. Zeus’ repertoire is sit, stay, out, off, shake and heal. We have taught him sit for his meals and wait until we say okay for him to start eating; to stay out of the kitchen when told to and; don’t go up the stairs until called.

Zeus is our 32nd foster dog and he is one of our favorites but we’ve had him for a long time because he doesn’t interview well. He gets excited when meeting new people and begins to do a little mouthing (never bites), which people mistake as aggression; but after a short time, he will settle down, loose interest and become the laid-back dog that he is. He would like a home with active people and a good sized, fenced in yard (for his zoomies). He is not good with small children. He gets along with most other dogs. If you are looking for a loving and protective companion, Zeus is your boy.

Application.

Please keep in mind that there may be multiple applications for a single dog and that even if your phone interview and home check (due to Covid we are asking for a video tour of your property) are successful, there is no guarantee that you will be matched with the dog you have applied for. We can always keep your application open for a future dog, if you are not accepted the first time. It can be a difficult decision for us, that we don’t take lightly.
